Pumpkin Pie Smoothie (Paleo & Vegan)

This delicious smoothie tastes like pumpkin pie but is totally healthy! Free of sugar (sweetened with dates) and full of nutrition, this paleo pumpkin smoothie is a perfect healthy snack or breakfast that will keep you full for a while.

Considering the fact that Ryan and I sit around all day on our computers working, it’s surprising to me how ravenous we both get by mid-afternoon. By that time we’re both ready for a break too. Lately, we’ve made a habit of beating that afternoon slump with smoothies!

Since I can’t seem to get enough of pumpkin recipes this fall, I invented a paleo pumpkin smoothie for us that we’ve been absolutely loving! It’s thick and creamy, seriously tastes like pumpkin pie, but it’s jam-packed with nutritional value.

Plus, this paleo pumpkin smoothie is only sweetened with dates (no added sugar), and it’s also gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. A win for everyone.

Here’s what you need to make the paleo pumpkin smoothie.

Grab your canned pumpkin, almond milk or alternative, and almond butter. These make up the creamy base. Next you’ll add pumpkin pie spice for flavor, and dates for sweetness. (Feel free to use some honey or maple syrup instead if you prefer, but I love the dates.) Then, optionally, add in flaxseed meal and maca powder for their nutritional benefits.

Flaxseed meal is a slightly nutty tasting powder that’s full of omega-3 essential fatty acids as well as antioxidants and fiber. It’s inexpensive and you can buy it on Amazon and in many grocery stores. You can add it to oatmeal, smoothies, fruit, and use it in baked goods. I eat it daily.

I began adding maca powder to my smoothies recently because it’s supposed to be helpful for healthy hormonal balance. Plus, it’s supposed be a natural mood and energy booster. Maca has a nutty and malty flavor. In addition to smoothies, you can add it to desserts and anything with chocolate. Some people even add it to their coffee. This one’s a little harder to find in standard grocery stores, but you can check health food stores or buy it on Amazon. I got mine at Trader Joe’s.
