These are the top 6 non-toxic and natural sunscreen products, rated highly for safety and effectiveness. Plus, they’re really affordable!
As summer approaches, it’s really important for us to consider one of the potentially most toxic products in our homes: sunscreen.
Because sunscreens usually include ingredients that help the product thoroughly soak through the skin, studies have shown that the ingredients used in sunscreen can be detected in people’s blood, urine, and even in mothers’ breast milk. That means it’s really important that we make sure the ingredients in our sunscreens are safe! We don’t want toxic chemicals in sunscreen to end up affecting our bodies.
Chemical and Mineral Sunscreens
There are two general categories of sunscreen: sunscreens with chemical active ingredients, and sunscreens with mineral active ingredients. As you can probably guess, the mineral active ingredients are much safer for the body. The 6 natural sunscreens I have recommended in this post are all mineral sunscreens.
What You Need to Know about SPF
SPF (sun protection factor) measures how well a sunscreen will protect you from sunburn and UVB rays. Unfortunately, it does not necessarily measure protection from UVA rays, which cause other types of skin damage, including melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer). Because of this, you can’t rely on SPF alone to tell you how well a particular kind of sunscreen will work. Look for the phrase “broad spectrum UVA/UVB.” This phrase means the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. All 6 of these natural sunscreen products protect against UVA and UVB rays.
In addition, it’s important to note that any SPF over 50 provides minimal if any additional protection than SPF 50 sunscreen. In other words, SPF 50 is basically a maximum, so don’t pay extra for SPFs higher than that.
Avoid Spray-On Sunscreens
The main risk when using spray-on sunscreen is that it is very easy to inhale it while applying it. Spray-on sunscreens usually contain chemicals which are dangerous and toxic for the body when inhaled. Plus, it’s much more difficult to ensure that you are coating your skin evenly or thickly enough to adequately protect your skin with spray-on sunscreen.
Reapply Regularly!
Applying sunscreen once then being out in the sun all day is not enough. The American Cancer Society recommends first putting on sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, then reapplying it every 2 hours. No sunscreen is really water-proof, so reapply after swimming, as well.

I have done a lot of research and have found these 6 natural sunscreens to be the best ones out there!
Each of these natural sunscreens has either a 1 or a 2 rating in the EWG database, which is a rating that tells you how toxic or non-toxic products are. The lower the number, the less toxic they are, with 1 and 2 ratings being the best. So, these 6 sunscreens are virtually toxin-free!
In addition, each of these sunscreens costs between $5 and $20 per bottle, which is very affordable compared to many natural sunscreen brands.
Finally, I only included natural sunscreens on this list that are highly rated by people who have used them!
Important Note: Many of these brands have multiple sunscreen products. Only the exact product I have listed is guaranteed to be non-toxic. When in doubt, you can search the product name in the EWG Database. Hint: fragrance-free, sensitive skin, and baby sunscreens are usually the safest with the least toxins.
