I’ve had pretty much no issue with switching out my products one by one for natural alternatives. For almost all of them, I’ve been able to find natural products that work just as well (or better!) than the mainstream products I’d been using. (You can check out my list of faves.) But the one thing I’ve had a really hard time finding is a natural dry shampoo that I like as much as my chemical-filled fave.
I actually hate washing my hair. I’m pretty low maintenance when it comes to my hair, but even so, any time spent washing, drying, and styling my hair is too much time in my opinion.
When I discovered dry shampoo I was a quick addict. If you’re unfamiliar, dry shampoo is a product you typically spray into dry hair, fluff it up a bit, and it can soak up any oil and give it great texture, totally hiding how dirty it is. It’s ideal for busy mornings and travel. Or just for lazy people like me.
I won’t throw my old favorite brand under the bus and tell you the name here, but if you were to look it up in EWG’s Skin Deep database (my go-to site to look up the toxicity of products), it has ingredients that rank highly for immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity, allergies, and endocrine disruption.
Ya know, maybe that’s why I started sneezing pretty much every time I used it.
So. That’s where my inspiration for this post came in. First of all, I need a natural dry shampoo that’s toxin-free. Second, I need it to work. And third, I need it to not be crazy expensive.
I reached out to a bunch of natural dry shampoo companies and said, “hey, want to send me your product to try out for this post I’m doing?” And some said, “heck yeah!”
After trying multiple natural dry shampoo products and trying to figure out the best way to use them, I’m sharing my top 5 with you in this post.

But first, how do you use natural dry shampoo?
The method might be different for every hair type. My hair is fine, thin, and relatively straight.
This is my fool-proof method:
- With my hair down, hold up the hair to expose the roots in the underside.
- Spray or sprinkle dry shampoo in the underside of my oily roots.
- This is the key right here: Use a boar bristle brush to evenly brush the powder through my roots.
- Style my hair as usual.
- Pretend my hair is clean.
5 of the Best Natural Dry Shampoo Brands
1. Hair Dance
This is my new favorite all natural dry shampoo! The lavender smells lovely, I like their sustainability and humanitarian initiatives, I prefer the applicator to the shakers (it doesn’t go all over), and last but not least it’s the most affordable option of the five! It’s for dark or blonde hair and the powder blends easily while absorbing oil really well. I think a little goes a long way.
Ingredients | All 100% clean! uses rice and oatmeal starches for oil absorption and essential oils for scent
Scents | I looooove the lavender. There’s also a grapefruit option that reminds me of Froot Loops.
Sustainability & Humanitarian Initiatives | According to their site, “10% of proceeds donated to Mercy Ships in their mission to provide free lifesaving surgeries for those in need.” Also vegan, cruelty-free, and made in USA.
Where to buy | You can get it on Amazon!
2. Lulu Organics Hair Powder
Ingredients | All 100% clean! Uses cornstarch for absorption and organic essential oils for scents.
Scents | Good luck choosing. I have the lavender clary sage and rose musk and they are amazing. You can also choose: vetiver & black pepper, geranium, patchouli & amber, jasmine, or unscented.
Sustainability & Humanitarian Initiatives | Cruelty-free.
Where to buy | You can get a 4oz size or 1oz size from Amazon.
3. Fat and the Moon Dry Shampoo
Ingredients | All 100% clean! Uses arrowroot and cocoa for absorption and lavender essential oil.
Scent | It smells like chocolate + lavender! It’s verrry sweet and yummy smelling.
Sustainability & Humanitarian Initiatives | Cruelty-free.
Where to buy | You can get it on Amazon or a few dollars cheaper on their site.
4. Captain Blankenship Mermaid Dry Shampoo
Ingredients | All 100% clean! Uses arrowroot, aluminum-free baking soda, and kaolin clay for absorption and organic essential oils for scent.
Scent | Geranium and palmarosa oils give this a floral beachy smell.
Sustainability & Humanitarian Initiatives | Cruelty-free, printing with vegetable-based inks, and a recyclable container.
Where to buy | Though not available on Amazon right now, you can get it on their site!
5. Innersense Refresh Dry Shampoo
This one is unlike all the others because it’s a foam rather than a powder. You add it to your roots then let them air dry or blow dry them. I liked the extra volume, but for me I didn’t like having to wait for my hair to dry.
Ingredients | Uses witch hazel & tapioca starch for absorption. I’d say do your research on this one, because although many ingredients are organic it has 5 or so ingredients that rate between 3-5 on EWG’s safety scale.
Scent | Citrus + honey.
Sustainability & Humanitarian Initiatives | Cruelty-free.
Where to buy | You can get it on Amazon or on their site for a few dollars less.

So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading. 🙂
amazing thanks for sharing
Absolutely! Sometimes it’s not the brand, it depends on how the way consumers use it. Common dry shampoo mistake is spraying just the visible part of your roots so, only the top layer of hair.
