Lately I’ve been trying to switch out all mainstream products that contain harmful chemicals and toxins, for natural and non-toxic alternatives. Laundry detergent was one of the first products I switched out.
I’ll explain why… Tide is a common household brand and probably the detergent many of us envision when we think of laundry. Unfortunately, the most basic version of Tide rates as an F on the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) scale of safety for cleaning products, ranking highly concerning for ingredients which can cause developmental and reproductive issues, allergies, and respiratory problems, as well as damage to the environment. (EWG is a widely-respected organization doing intensive research to help us rid our lives of toxins.)
If a product as commonplace as Tide is that toxic, we have good reason to look for quality natural laundry detergents to use instead!
I use EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning to research the toxicity levels of specific household products. It gives each product a ranking between A-F to indicate its safety – A is the best, and F is the worst based on the product’s ingredients.
The problem is that oftentimes when I try a new product that is free of toxins, it doesn’t work nearly as well as the ones that are full of them! Anyone else had that experience?
