How We Got $200 Round-Trip Flights from the US to Europe

Update: Wow Air went out of business in March 2019.

We are excited to share how we got $200 round trip flights to Europe from the USA, and how you might be able to get ridiculously cheap flights to Europe too!

In December of last year, Ryan and I got an email from an airline telling us that for about two days, all their flights were 50% off.

That’s an exciting email to get from any airline with flights to Europe, but this budget airline’s flights are already very cheap! So when you take 50% off, the prices are incredibly low.

When we checked flights from Chicago, IL to Amsterdam, Netherlands, prices were originally $400 round trip. But, with the discount they were only $200! Flights to Europe for that cheap are pretty much unheard of. Naturally, we couldn’t pass up that deal.

Last year I flew with the same airline from Los Angeles to Amsterdam, and I only paid $325 round trip because of another promotional deal!

Introducing: Wow Air.

Wow Air is a budget Icelandic airline that flies from several US cities, a couple of Canadian cities, and to many cities in Europe.

It’s called a budget airline, because their prices are very low. But with those low prices, not much is included. For example, you have to pay extra for any bags beyond a personal item, and not even water is free on board. For all the details on what to expect when flying with Wow Air, check out my post: Everything You Need to Know About Flying with Wow Air.

As an Icelandic airline, their flights have layovers in Reykjavik, Iceland’s airport, Keflavik. Plus, their airline gives you the option of booking a “Stopover” flight. Stopovers are kind of like extended layovers. You get to spend as many days as you choose in Iceland between your origin and final destination. Unfortunately, often their promotional deals (like the 50% off promo we used) will not be applicable to stopover flights.

How can you find out when Wow Air is having these sorts of crazy deals?

It’s simple. Head on over to the Wow Air website to sign up for their email newsletter. (They call it the WOW club.) They don’t send emails that often, but when they do you want to pay attention! Usually they’re emailing you to tell you about crazy deals!
