My bedroom is the space I have spent the most time decluttering and trying to organize in the last few months.
It’s so easy to let our bedrooms and bedroom closets be the spaces we stash everything we don’t know what to do with. Most of us have clothes we don’t wear and items we don’t use because we forget about them. And we forget about them because we aren’t organized and don’t have a purposeful place for them.
So often when I think of organizing, I think of ugly plastic bins and cardboard boxes, maybe with masking tape labels. But honestly, stashing stuff away in boxes isn’t really organizing, it’s more like hoarding.
That’s why step one to organizing your bedroom is definitely decluttering.
That means, getting rid of everything you won’t miss. I’ve written a guide to decluttering your entire home, one room at a time, which is an excellent resource if you know you need to get rid of stuff in your home to simplify your life.
Second, find ways that are both functional and tasteful to organize your belongings! One of my favorite ways to do this is to find things that both organize and display your belongings at the same time.
I’ve put together this collection of 7 minimalistic DIY organization projects that are both decorative and useful for organizing your bedroom.
Baskets for Wardrobe Drawers
From Homey Oh My
By measuring her drawers and finding the perfect sized baskets to fit in them, Amy completely revamped her wardrobe drawers with this DIY organization project! Click over to her post to see her before and after pictures – they’re really inspiring!
She got her baskets quite inexpensively from Michael’s, but baskets can be surprisingly expensive to buy other places! My #1 favorite place to buy baskets is at thrift stores, but when you’re looking for a set of baskets with specific measurements, that might not be the best place to look. I set out to find comparable inexpensive, attractive yet functional baskets on Amazon and found a couple of great options. You can click these images to view the baskets on Amazon:
DIY No-Sew Rope Coil Basket
From Alice and Lois
I think this rope coil basket DIY organization project would make a perfect laundry hamper or basket for blankets to keep in your room or closet! It’s super easy and inexpensive to make. All you need is cotton piping and a hot glue gun, with a bucket or basket to model your basket after.
If you want to add the leather straps, you’ll need a leather hole punch, rivets set, and leather straps.
DIY Scarf Hanger
From Just A Girl and Her Blog
I love this DIY organization hack, because I need it – my scarves are currently in at least three different places! Using a single pants hanger, you can hang fit multiple scarves on one hook (whereas you only would’ve fit one or two on a normal hook or hanger).
Here’s a quality pants hanger on Amazon that’s very similar to the one pictured:
DIY Hanging Jewelry Display
From Design Sponge
I’ve struggled to find practical hanging jewelry holders that I actually like. This one, made out of macrame and copper pipes, I genuinely love! It doubles as a practical organizer and a pretty wall hanging.
To make it, you’ll need copper piping (which you can buy at most hardware stores), a tube cutter or hacksaw, and some rope. Click through for the tutorial on Design Sponge!
If you love the look of copper pipes in home decor as much as I do, check out my post, 30 Home Decor DIYs to Make with Copper Pipes!
DIY Footed Vanity Tray
From Homey Oh My
Using the lid of a wooden box, some wooden blocks, and white paint, you can easily put together this footed vanity tray! It’s perfect for both organizing and displaying any little things you want easy access to.
DIY Pretty Wall Hooks
From A Beautiful Mess
Whether you need more storage for bags, jewelry, hats, or coats, here’s an instructional for how you can add hooks to your closet or bedroom that are both functional and beautiful! I love how putting the thin boards up on the wall first make the hooks stand out that much more.
DIY Ladder Shelf Shoe Storage
From Design Sponge
This DIY ladder shelf would be perfect for your bedroom, wardrobe, or even entryway. Again, it’s the combination of function and minimal decor that I love about this.
You do definitely need to be comfortable sawing and drilling for this DIY, but it is still quite simple to put together.
