Lately I’ve been learning more about toxins in our everyday products, as I’m trying to eliminate as many harmful chemicals as possible in my life.
As I started looking into the toxicity of cleaning products I was legitimately horrified! So many products I’ve used have been exposing my body and the environment to all kinds of harmful toxins.
I believe household products should make my home safer, not more dangerous.
Research from the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a widely-respected organization doing intensive research to help us rid our lives of toxins, shows that common cleaning products can cause all of the following:
- Asthma and other respiratory problems
- Exposure to known chemicals that cause cancer in humans
- Increased risk of birth defects when used by or around pregnant women
- Chemical burns, poisonings, allergies and irritations
I use EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning to research the toxicity levels of specific cleaning products. It gives each product a ranking between A-F to indicate its safety – A is the best, and F is the worst based on the product’s ingredients.
The problem is that oftentimes when I try new non-toxic cleaning products, they doesn’t work nearly as well as the ones that are full of them! Anyone else had that experience?
So, I’ve set out to solve that problem by researching all the best non-toxic cleaning products according to EWG, and finding which of those are also the most effective according to reviews by people who have actually used them!

There are several cleaning products manufacturers that claim to have products that are nontoxic, having natural ingredients or claim to be environment friendly. However, there is no standard definition for these. Such products could still be toxic and cause irritation to the skin, mouth and eyes if not used properly.
You’re absolutely right! That’s why I check every cleaning product on EWG’s website to check each ingredient for its toxicity levels.
