If you are a kombucha lover, chances are you have looked at the brands of kombucha and wondered, which is the best kombucha for my health?

Kombucha: opinions differ on whether the health benefits are legitimate, or if it’s just a vinegary-tasting concoction that has no positive effect.

Well, I love it, and you might love it too! I believe the research that it’s crazy good for you – you can read all about it’s health benefits in my post, Beginner’s Guide to Kombucha. You can also learn to make your own kombucha at home and save some money.

Now that kombucha has become such a popular health drink, you can find lots of brands at almost any grocery store!

I’ve written this list of 5 essentials to look for when buying kombucha to help you ensure you’re getting the best kombucha for your health!

1. It needs to be RAW and unpasteurized.

If the kombucha isn’t raw, that means it’s been pasteurized. And if it’s been pasteurized, that means its probiotic microbes are dead and won’t do anything for you. When kombucha has been pasteurized the vitamin levels have likely been reduced as well. Raw also means there will be no artificial flavors or preservatives.

2. Look for low sugar content.

Kombucha has so many natural health benefits, you don’t want to combat them with excess added sugar! A good brand of kombucha should only have a few grams of sugar.

3. The bottle should be glass.

Kombucha is very acidic, so being stored in plastic or metal means it can degrade the container and elements of those materials can end up in the kombucha itself – not good. Dark glass bottles are even better, because light can damage the probiotics.

4. Look for optimal probiotic levels.

Often the bottle will say the culture content of the kombucha, which is the number of micro-organisms. Typically the higher the number, the better, because it means there are more varieties of probiotics inside. Another thing to look for is that it has gone through a full 21-day fermentation process. This full 21 days is necessary as well for optimal probiotic content.

5. Prioritize organic brands.

Organic ensures the ingredients have not been treated with harsh or toxic chemicals, and that its production has been easier on the environment.
